How to Relax and Stay Calm In The Unknown

This is an uncertain time and for us to stay grounded and not let ourselves get stressed, we need to maintain some sort of structure in order to maintain control and bring peace to our minds and thoughts. It's important that we take care of our mental health, and so below are some ways to minimise those stress levels:

Limit the amount of time you spend watching the news I started watching the news relentlessly, and then realised it was actually doing me more harm than good, as the news can portray only the negative and not the positive which isn't great for our state of minds. Allow 15 minutes to digest and know what is happening but switch off afterwards.

Get out in the sunshine, breathe in the air, and move your body Exercise and being outdoors with nature is a scientifically proven way to boost our endorphins and brighten our moods. If you are working from home, it’s so important to step away, go for a walk and allow your mind to be mindful! We are due lovely weather over the weekend so make the most of it. Even if you picnic in your back garden!

Create structure in your day Don't slob around watching Netflix, as you'll soon find yourself longing for routine. Keep to your usual routine, especially in the mornings and create structure around your new 'normal' of working from home. Add exercise, and make healthy lunches at break time. You will feel better having brought back some control.

Limit social media

Social media can make us feel anxious at the best of times. Yes, it's a powerful engagement tool, but it's also quite detrimental if you are not in a great frame of mind. Given the light of the situation, I would suggest setting up a time limit per day on your phone where you can browse and interact. This will reduce any irrational fake news stories that may enter onto your feed and generate more stress and anxiety.

Listen to music or a podcast This can be great escapism and can bring lots of positivity through the power of music or great stories. Things that make you laugh or take you out of yourself do amazing things for your spirit. Try a new podcast and see how great you feel afterwards.

Call a friend Be cautious with this one. Call friends who are usually optimistic and are not the type to be negative. This may sound harsh, but you need to surround yourself with positive vibes only, so - you should try and avoid anyone who is generating panic if you are feeling particularly stressed or vulnerable. A great talk along with a cup of tea can cure every bad feeling you are having - so pick up the phone!
